Students and principals outline middle-school transformation: more Algebra I access, MyCAP planning and adjusted schedules

Middle-school students and school leaders told the Springfield School Committee on Sept. 4 about schedule changes and programs intended to boost readiness and postsecondary planning across grades 6–8.
Students from South End, STEM, Zanetti Montessori and Renaissance each described classroom experiences and extracurricular opportunities. South End students highlighted an "acceleration" block for intervention or enrichment; STEM students praised algebra offerings and career-readiness blocks; Zanetti students announced a revived student government and an eighth-grade algebra opportunity; Renaissance students described an expedition project examining how to make football safer.
Principals Andrea Williams and Yara Gonzales, supported by district curriculum leaders, described schedule tweaks that slightly extend class periods to create additional core instruction time and a Friday college- and career-readiness block. The district is expanding access to Algebra I in multiple middle schools (Conservatory, Renaissance, STEM, Zanetti) and offering algebra readiness in South End. The district will provide targeted supports such as a Saturday Success Academy and increased professional development for teachers.
District staff emphasized MyCAP, a digital college- and career-planning tool that begins in sixth grade and carries through high school, enabling students to set goals and explore pathways. Leaders said the program increased participation across middle schools and helps students make informed high-school choices. Principals said advisory/"crew" time (about 25 minutes daily) and open-gym options on Fridays provide students time to reset and support social-emotional needs.
Committee members asked about recess, specialty-school pathways and how MyCAP will direct students to specialized programs; leaders said counselors and teachers will use MyCAP to advise students, and specialty-school requirements will be coordinated with program leads. The district plans continued follow-up and more presentations as the rollout continues.
