Granite Falls board approves general fund extension to add buffer ahead of payroll close

The Granite Falls School Board on Aug. 13 approved Resolution 242509, a one-time extension to the general fund budget intended to provide a buffer against uncertain year-end payroll costs.
Business manager Marshall Cruz told the board the district is a month from fiscal year end and payroll remains the largest unknown. "We might go over our allocated budget by about a $100,000, maybe $200,000 based on how this payroll comes in," Cruz said, recommending the board add a buffer to avoid an overrun and subsequent reporting to OSPI.
Cruz proposed adding $1 million in both expense and revenue to the general fund to provide margin in case payroll or extra hours produce overages. The board moved, seconded and approved the resolution on voice vote.
Board discussion focused on prudence ahead of closing the year and the need to authorize any overrun in advance rather than risk noncompliance with state reporting requirements. The resolution was approved by voice vote; no detailed roll-call tally was read into the record.
