At its Sept. 10 meeting the Macomb Township Board of Trustees approved a string of unanimous votes that will affect zoning, a capital project design contract, facility rental policy and the township’s holiday schedule.
On zoning, the board approved an amendment to sections 10.0311 and 10.0331 to change side and rear setbacks for accessory structures. Planner/attorney Mr. Box explained the amendment targets sheds 150 square feet and smaller: "Right now they're required to be 7 and a half feet off side and rear property lines. We're reducing that down to 5 feet to allow people to have a little bit more use of their rear yards," he said. The change also consolidates duplicate text so a single section can be edited in the future.
The board also awarded design services for the planned Macomb Township Square to OHM Advisors for $180,000. Staff said the township secured a Michigan Economic Development Corporation grant of just over $1,900,000 to help fund the project, with roughly half of that amount expected to be the township’s match. Mr. Box recommended OHM because of prior work in the area and familiarity with the desired aesthetic.
Trustees adopted a rental policy and rate structure for the relocated historic Macomb Township Hall, effective Sept. 11, 2025, to allow rentals for events such as weddings. Separately, the board approved a request to close township offices during the Christmas/New Year holiday period and an additional day (Friday, Jan. 2), noting that the closure is contingent on execution of two letters of understanding with the management and hourly unions; staff said the treasurer's office would be open one day during the period to collect taxes.
Each item was approved by unanimous vote; the meeting record shows routine procedural approvals earlier in the agenda (bills, minutes, consent agenda) and no defeats or amendments to the listed motions.
