Delta County approves opioid task force grants and appoints Whitney Maloney

The board recorded award amounts as follows: 90th District Court — $30,000; Great Lakes Recovery Center — $29,975; Escanaba Area Public Schools — $30,000; Escanaba Student Success Center — up to $8,847. Staff noted one applicant’s request was given a recommended-approval status contingent on tightening budget line items to a single dollar amount before final agreement.
Separately, the task force reviewed its bylaws and determined the bylaws do not explicitly authorize moving an existing board member into a different category seat to fill a vacancy. The task force recommended the board shift an existing member if necessary and preserve staggered expiration dates. Based on that review, the board considered two external applicants and moved to appoint Whitney Maloney to the task force in a nonprofit/community-service slot.
During the appointment vote one commissioner stated a conflict and abstained, citing employment with the appointee. The motion to appoint Whitney Maloney passed with recorded support from the majority of commissioners.
The board also approved minor RFP/application changes recommended by the task force to require applicants to disclose other funding sources and to clarify whether projects could proceed if partial funding from the task force were not awarded.
