The superintendent told the school committee that the district will be reviewed the week of Oct. 27 under the Department of Education's tiered focus monitoring process. He said the review, more comprehensive than past visits, will emphasize special education, 504 accommodations and civil-rights compliance and is designed to examine district operations more broadly than program-specific checks.
"This is the first time that we've been, reviewed in this capacity by the Department of Ed," the superintendent said. Reviewers (conducted by AIR) will observe classrooms and run family/parent forums during that week; the superintendent said reviewers will likely visit about 75% of classrooms for short observations and that members of the committee will have opportunities for one-on-one meetings with reviewers.
When asked what the review could mean for the district, the superintendent said the monitoring is public and comprehensive but not intended to 'shut us down.' He said if the Department identifies noncompliance with special-education or civil-rights requirements, there are clear corrective actions; otherwise the review identifies strengths and areas for improvement.
Committee members asked follow-up questions about timelines and how the district would engage families and staff during the review period; the superintendent said more information about family forums and participation would be shared as plans are finalized.
