Planning commission approves 190‑foot monopole at municipal fire station

The Mentor Planning Commission voted Aug. 14 to approve a conditional use permit for a wireless telecommunications monopole at 6929 Heisey Road.
Jesse Stiles, president of North Star Towers, told the commission the proposed monopole would be 190 feet with a 4‑foot lightning rod (the applicant initially referenced 9 feet but corrected to 4 feet once the plans were checked) and would sit on city‑owned property adjacent to a municipal fire station. Stiles said the structure is designed to be co‑locatable so additional service providers can mount on the tower in future, and that associated ground equipment will be fenced and unmanned.
Commissioners asked whether FAA aircraft warning lighting would be required; Stiles and staff said FAA rules generally do not require lighting for towers under 200 feet but local or zoning conditions can impose additional requirements. Administration clarified one of the proposed conditions is to keep utilities under Old Heisley underground if they cross that road. The commission approved the application with six conditions.
Next steps: final engineering and an updated lighting/plan exhibit will be filed with staff for permit and inspection.
