Council proclaims Public Power, Fire Prevention and Arts month; approves small grants and administrative items

Radford City Council adopted three ceremonial proclamations recognizing Public Power Week (Oct. 5–11, 2025), Fire Prevention Week (coinciding with Oct. 5–11) and October 2025 as National Arts and Humanities Month. Directors of the Electric Department and the Fire Department accepted the proclamations.
The council also accepted two grant awards and appropriated funds: $17,650 to support alcohol enforcement activities (DUI checkpoints and preliminary breath test units) and $22,800 for DMV police traffic services (speed enforcement and equipment). Both appropriation ordinances passed by voice vote.
In other administrative business, council agreed to table the DMV lisenbee agent memorandum of agreement for further consideration and approved Social Services' request to deviate from the state holiday schedule to follow the city's holiday schedule; the Social Services change will go next to the State Board of Virginia for final approval and was described as cost‑neutral.
The mayor noted upcoming community events, including the Highlanders Festival on Oct. 11, and adjourned the meeting.
