Bakersfield Pregnancy Center tells Kern County board it provides free prenatal and support services

At the board’s August session, Erin Rogers, executive director of the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center, gave an informational presentation describing the center’s services and reach.
Rogers said the center — a faith-based nonprofit that also operates as a licensed primary care clinic — has served more than 50,000 people over 40 years in Kern County and provides free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STI testing and treatment, parenting classes, material assistance (diapers, formula, car seats) and individual advocacy. Rogers said services are available in English and Spanish and the center runs a fatherhood program with outreach into jails and community sites.
Rogers described medical oversight at the center, naming two medical directors who review care: Dr. Juan Lopez (OB-GYN) and Dr. Eugene Roos (radiology), and said ultrasound scans are reviewed within 24 hours in accordance with state requirements. On funding she said the center receives no federal or state funding, relies on individual donors, churches and some private grants, and that roughly 67% of its support comes from individuals.
Board members asked about the local shortage of OB providers; Rogers attributed recruitment and malpractice-insurance costs as limiting factors. She provided locations (1801 Eighteenth Street and 9900 Stockdale Highway, Suite 109) and the center’s website (wehelpyou.org) for referrals.
