Board adopts Constitution Day/America250 resolution, plans year‑long curriculum tie‑ins

Board member Mr. Benway introduced a resolution to commemorate Constitution Day 2025 and to participate in the United States' America250 (semi‑quincentennial) celebrations through 2026. His plan called for ringing the old schoolhouse bell at noon on Sept. 17, 2025, curriculum tie‑ins in history and civics across grade bands, student dramatizations, art and writing projects, community displays and partnerships with historical societies and veterans groups.
"We want to encourage civic pride and showcase Moore County Schools as a leader among schools in the America250 celebration," Mr. Benway said, and he moved that the board adopt the resolution as written. Dr. Dahl and other members supported the plan; the board approved the resolution by voice vote.
Sonam Gebhardt, director for curriculum and instruction, described existing and planned activities: read‑alouds and graphic organizers for K–2, a "Constitution treasure hunt" and reflective writing in grades 3–5, and a video and questionnaire for secondary classes (grades 6–12) to prompt discussion and writing. Gebhardt said principals have been surveyed to share activities and extension resources across schools.
The resolution directs the superintendent and staff to develop detailed plans and resources to support these initiatives and to enter the resolution into the official board record.
