IT staff reported a rising workload and urged the City of Alice council to consider adding a network/cybersecurity technician.
Hector, an IT staff member, said recent workload figures include "over a thousand support calls" and more than "400 help desk tickets," describing aging hardware and a large number of software integrations that increase maintenance needs. He recommended a network technician with cybersecurity skills so the city can respond faster to incidents despite having CrowdStrike endpoint protection.
"CrowdStrike does protect us... it doesn't actually resolve the threat. We have to have somebody physically in house... that's where you need somebody to come in that's that needs to be here to be able to do it," Hector said. Staff also told the council they budgeted about $20,000 to replace older computers and planned department-wide equipment purchases to reduce system failures.
Councilmembers asked staff to evaluate salary ranges and explore lower-grade positions and part-time options to balance cost and capability. City staff agreed to return with a refined cost estimate and a staffing proposal at a subsequent meeting.
