Council approves renaming short Highland Street segment to honor donor Mark Broder

The Alice City Council on Aug. 6 adopted an ordinance renaming a 360-foot stretch of Highland Street between Stadium Road and Woodlawn Street to Broder Street in recognition of attorney Mark Broder’s service and a substantial donation for street projects.
A presenter told the council Broder acted as the city’s attorney on natatorium matters and that, following arbitration, he donated a “substantial amount of funds, several $100,000” to support street projects. When asked for an amount, the presenter said the donation was “between 400 and $500,000.” The presenter said those funds would be used toward a SealCo street-improvement project that had been delayed by inflation.
The council moved and seconded the ordinance and approved it by voice vote. The transcript records gratitude for Broder’s contribution and a brief recognition that a council member, Michael Sparza, had sustained an injury and asked a colleague to present the item on his behalf.
