Council hears request to join county opposition to LCRA transmission route J1 near Lampasas reservoirs

A council member told the Lampasas City Council on Aug. 25 that representatives of the local Water Control Improvement District (WCID) have asked the city to consider submitting a letter in opposition to the Lower Colorado River Authority's (LCRA) proposed transmission route J1. Council members said Lampasas County had been asked to submit a letter and WCID requested the city consider the same.
A WCID representative, introduced as John Walker, was in the room for questions. Speakers said route J1 would cross one reservoir and run close to others and that state rules limit blasting within a half-mile of dams. Commenters raised safety and downstream-development concerns tied to dams that have been reclassified as "high hazard," meaning the downstream consequences of a hypothetical failure are greater, even though the speakers said the dams themselves remain structurally sound.
"They have asked that the city council consider the same" (opposition letter), an unidentified council member said. Council members asked staff and the representative questions about route alternatives and requested the draft letter already included later in the council packet be reviewed for accuracy; staff confirmed a drafted letter was on the packet for later action.
No formal vote to send a letter was recorded during the workshop discussion; council members signaled support for reviewing and finalizing the drafted letter in the forthcoming regular-meeting packet.
