Campton Hills trustees heard an explanation of a state-authorized local grocery-tax option that would allow municipalities to continue collecting a grocery-related revenue stream after the state changed its collection rules.
The village attorney said the statute change allows municipalities to adopt a local grocery tax that the Illinois Department of Revenue would collect and pass through to local governments. The attorney noted that more than 100 municipalities have enacted such local grocery taxes and that Campton Hills would need to take action by Oct. 1 to avoid disruptions beginning Jan. 1, 2026.
Trustees discussed procedural aspects of adopting the tax and staff noted the village could only implement an existing Department of Revenue–approved ordinance; the village's role would be to adopt the ordinance in local code to preserve its share of the former statewide collection. No formal vote was recorded at this meeting.
