Hampton Hills adopts municipal grocery tax ordinance

The Village of Hampton Hills board adopted Ordinance 25-30, a municipal grocery retailers occupation tax and municipal grocery service occupation tax, using a template prepared by the Illinois Municipal League and reviewed by the Illinois Department of Revenue.
Village counsel explained the ordinance is a standard template and advised the board the village must file with the Illinois Department of Revenue by Oct. 1 if it adopts the tax. Trustees discussed that the tax primarily affects the local Circle K convenience/grocery outlet and is intended to preserve revenue that otherwise flows to the state. Trustee Kim and others said the measure helps the village reclaim shared revenue given the village’s limited real-estate tax base.
The motion to adopt Ordinance 25-30 passed on a roll-call vote with trustees recorded as voting aye.
