Waunakee approves zoning change to allow above‑ground propane refill at Ace Hardware

The Waunakee Village Board approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance to allow an above‑ground propane filling station as part of Ace Hardware’s proposed expansion, after staff and the fire inspector reviewed the proposal and no members of the public registered comment.
Staff said the proposed amendment would remove a prior 10‑foot separation restriction for above‑ground tanks while adding safety precautions. An online representative for Ace Hardware explained the existing tank is a 500‑liquid‑gallon unit that the company seeks to relocate to the rear of the building, and said engineers and the fire department recommended constructing a blast wall to reduce risk and move the tank away from public sidewalks. The representative also said supplier inspections are performed, typically on an annual basis.
Trustees asked technical questions about cubic‑foot limits, maintenance and inspection responsibility and whether past installations would be grandfathered. Village counsel noted the amendment would apply village‑wide and not only to this project.
The board moved and approved the zoning amendment; one trustee recorded an abstention. The ordinance will be incorporated into chapter 133 (zoning) as amended.
