City honors first responders and community organizations; Tree City USA flag presented
Summary
Council recognized Lufkin’s Tree City USA designation, honored multiple Fire Department crews and a police officer with life-saving and meritorious service awards, and allowed time for attendees to leave before regular meeting business.
At the start of the meeting the council presented several recognitions.
Texas A&M Forest Service district forester Zachary Olbelgan presented the Tree City USA flag to the city in recognition of Lufkin's continued commitment to urban forestry. Officials described the Tree City USA program's four standards — a tree board, tree ordinances, investment in urban forestry and an annual Arbor Day celebration — as the basis for the designation.
The council also presented Fire Service life-saving awards to multiple Lufkin Fire Department personnel credited with successful resuscitations and emergency care on separate dates in June and May. Individual crew members named in the remarks included driver-operators and captains who participated in the responses; the mayor and council publicly thanked them for their service.
Finally, the Police Department presented a meritorious-service recognition to Officer Christian Ibarra for rescuing a person who had climbed over a guardrail on an overpass; the chief described the officer's quick action in preventing a potential fatality.
These recognitions preceded the regular agenda to allow recipients and attendees to depart before business continued.
