Whittier officer honored for DUI enforcement; MADD presents 23152 pin

"He’s been an officer for approximately 7 years," Whittier Police Captain Aaron Ruiz said of Officer Ezekiel Hernandez. Ruiz told the council Hernandez "made 43, DUI arrests" while patrolling Santa Fe Springs and "I think for the total for the year, he made 44." Ruiz and other speakers emphasized the public-safety importance of proactive DUI enforcement.
Rose Zapata, program specialist for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, presented an award and the 23152 pin, explaining the pin symbolizes California Vehicle Code section 23152, which governs driving under the influence. Zapata told the council MADD "applaud[s] you for your commitment" and said each DUI removed from the road is a potential life saved.
The council observed the presentation and thanked the officer and partnering agencies. No policy change or action item resulted from the recognition.
