The Southington Board of Education, acting on recommendations from its Finance Committee, approved several financial and procurement actions at the meeting.
Finance Committee chair Mr. Carson reported a committee meeting on Sept. 8 that produced three agenda items. First, the board moved to award snow‑removal and sanding services (a three‑year term covering four schools) following a competitive request for bids that yielded multiple contractors; the motion passed.
Second, the committee reviewed the district’s FY25 financials in light of a state legislative change that produced an extra special‑education supplemental allocation to the district. The committee identified $62,600 for three one‑time capital projects (painting contracts, sidewalk repairs and an EMS controller repair) and moved to deposit $453,780 of unexpended FY25 funds into the district’s non‑lapsing (unexpended) account held on the town ledger. Miss Mellett (director of finance) clarified that the board retains control over use of those non‑lapsing funds and that the remaining unexpended balance is $331,180 until further projects are identified. The motion to move $453,780 to non‑lapsing funds passed.
Third, the board voted to award the Southington High School Upper Field and walkways project to FieldTurf of Waterford, Connecticut, for $140,600 as recommended by administration. That motion was seconded and approved.
In new business the board ratified the agreement between the Southington Board of Education and the AFSCME union as presented.
The finance committee noted that future identification of specific capital projects will go through the committee process before full‑board approval; the chair said the conceptual plan for tennis courts and parking will be presented to the board and then to the town council for any required town‑level review and potential capital funding discussions.
