Santa Fe Springs recognizes donors after backpack giveaway that served local students

The Santa Fe Springs City Council on Monday recognized businesses and volunteers who supported the Community Services Department’s annual backpack program, which the department said helped families prepare children for the school year.
"The Community Services Department hosted its annual backpack program on August 6 at The Gusts Of Law School Neighborhood Center where we supported families and youth in preparing them for the new school year," Community Services Manager Ed Ramirez told the council. Ramirez said the event raised "$5,320 in monetary and in kind donations" and that staff distributed 98 backpacks at the event and 116 in total thereafter.
Ramirez thanked local partners and called forward representatives from sponsoring organizations for group certificates. Donors named by staff included Associated Packaging Incorporated, Beyond 20 First Century Beauty and Academy, CL Consulting Incorporated, EchoWise Incorporated, the Norwalk Santa Fe Springs Rotary Club, Collins Aerospace, the Santa Fe Springs Women’s Club, the Santa Fe Springs Firefighters Local 3507, the Santa Fe Springs Employees Association, Universal Waste Systems, and local residents Yoko and Paul Nakamura.
Council members praised volunteers and the program’s impact. Mayor Pro Tem Zamora said the program "makes [students] feel more successful and it empowers them" and called for gratitude to volunteers who donate time and services. City staff also noted complimentary services provided at the event, including haircuts and clothing distribution.
The council accepted Ramirez’s request to recognize donors; staff took a group photo and presented certificates. No formal action or funding change was taken at the meeting.
