District outlines transportation-building plan, playground and solar/boiler work

Dr. Craig told the Kings Park board the district completed several summer facilities projects and is preparing larger capital work this fall, including a new transportation building and energy-performance upgrades.
He described recently finished work: the Fort Salonga playground (a donation from the Reichert family in "excess of $300,000" made the project possible) and tennis-court resurfacing supported by a USTA grant of $60,000 ($30,000 per court). On the transportation building, Dr. Craig said the 2-bay garage and temporary mobile offices will be replaced by a combined garage, transportation offices, training space and storage. "Our goal is ... to bring the successful loan bidder to the board on October 7," he said, and added the project will likely begin in November and will include four charging stations for electric buses.
Dr. Craig warned that keeping the transportation operation functional while construction proceeds will be challenging and that bus staging and relocations will be necessary. He said some buildings will receive solar installations and two new boilers at RGO Intermediate School are planned as part of the energy-performance contract, with related work tied to SED permitting and expected to start after heating season.
Board members thanked staff and noted the budgetary and operational complexities of the project; administrators said they will return with updates and a recommended loan bidder following vendor selection.
