Portsmouth EDA agrees to sponsor Black Diamond Weekend; staff to coordinate level of support

The Portsmouth Economic Development Authority voted unanimously to sponsor the Black Diamond Weekend event, which the presentation said will be held in Hampton this year.
EDA staff reviewed a report on the event’s 2024 economic impact and said the organization is seeking a $10,000 sponsorship level. Staff proposed departmental sponsorship at the $2,500 tier and asked the board to consider matching that contribution to create a combined $5,000 support package and other in-kind promotion.
“We would be prepared to sponsor the $2,500 level. If you're willing to match that, that would be a $5,000 contribution,” said Brian (EDA staff). The board moved and seconded a sponsorship motion and approved it by roll call, 5–0.
Staff noted the event rotates among localities and that sponsorship benefits include promotional opportunities and a booth at the event. Staff also said they have produced an economic-impact summary for the prior year showing attendance and local spending; the presentation reported ‘‘over 431 attendees’’ in the prior year and provided hospitality and local-spend figures. Those figures were cited from the event report presented to the board.
Next steps: staff will advise the event organizer of EDA sponsorship and follow up with details and options for board members who wish to attend.
