The Portsmouth Scribe and Gun Violence Prevention Task Force advanced committee work on a proposed public survey and addressed several administrative items at its August meeting.
Community engagement: James Cullen, chair of the Community Engagement Committee, presented two draft documents: a community-strength assessment with a public-safety focus and a gun-violence community-safety survey. Cullen said the committee is testing interactive formats (a short video introduction, mobile-friendly click boxes and QR-code distribution) to increase public response and suggested incentives and varied outreach approaches. He asked task-force members to return suggested edits and question changes promptly so the committee can prepare a revised instrument.
Legal and timeline considerations: Members noted FOIA and data-collection/storage requirements. The chair asked for edits to be returned by Friday at noon, after which the committee will coordinate with the city manager’s office and legal staff to confirm the questions and distribution method meet city policy.
Other committee updates: Leticia Sessoms said the intervention committee continues to add local and outside providers to a resource list and reported recent trainings for violence interrupters and clinicians led by Dr. Jordan Kane; Daryl Redmond added that a community engagement training occurred earlier in the week. The resource-allocation committee reported no new items, and the data & metrics committee chair was not present.
Administrative items and scheduling: Members adopted amendments to correct the meeting location (to City Council Chambers) and to move committee updates to earlier on the agenda. Councilman (name not given) noted a scheduling conflict for the posted September 8 meeting; staff (Miss Matthews) will follow up to confirm chamber availability and a new date.
What’s next: The chair asked commissioners to provide written feedback on the survey drafts by the stated Friday deadline so the community engagement committee can revise the instruments and pursue legal review prior to public release. Several members requested additional technical-assistance and community-engagement support for roll out.
