The Kenosha Unified School District Board voted unanimously to adopt administration’s recommendation to expand protected professional preparation time for elementary and high‑school teachers beginning with the 2026–27 school year and to direct administration to develop a matching prep‑time policy.
Mister Bridal moved the motion and said the change "is essential" and would protect professional minutes for staff. Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Weiss (referred to in public comments earlier in the meeting) and staff explained that adding protected prep time requires planning during the winter to accommodate master schedules, student schedules and possible additional hires. The administration estimated the cost for elementary and high‑school prep‑time expansion at "just over $3,000,000 between 3 and 3.5" million dollars pending final staffing analyses.
Board members and public commenters framed prep time as a student‑learning issue: KEA representatives and classroom teachers testified that lack of prep time harms instruction and working conditions, and urged codification. The board discussion acknowledged limited budget capacity and the need to identify reductions or re‑prioritization elsewhere; members said they would build the assumption into 2026–27 budget construction and work through committee and staff to identify implementation details.
The board’s instruction is for administration to return with a prep‑time policy and budget implementation plan; actual spending will depend on final staffing and budget choices during the 2026–27 planning cycle.
