Grass Valley honors Lt. Clint Bates; Dale Norvell named his successor

Grass Valley’s City Council recognized Lieutenant Clint Bates’ retirement and announced the promotion of Dale Norvell to lieutenant during Tuesday’s meeting.
Chief Alex Gamelgaard praised Bates’ long service, saying Bates “has done that, and he’s done it well,” and noted Bates joined the department in 1999 and has served in roles including traffic officer, detective, field training officer and lieutenant. Yolanda Cookson, representing Senator Megan Dally of the First Senate District, presented a certificate thanking Bates “for your commitment to public safety, leadership and training and mentorship.”
Chief Gamelgaard framed the promotion as part of the department’s succession planning. He introduced Dale Norvell, who told the council, “I’ve been here for 17 years and I look forward to finishing up my career here,” and pledged to try to “fill Clint’s shoes” and leave the department better than he found it.
Multiple attendees and local officials offered congratulatory remarks. The council noted the recognition was ceremonial; no formal personnel action was recorded in the meeting minutes during the public portion of the meeting.
