The Historic Commission narrowed its walking-tour and banner candidates and agreed on a package of downtown 'priority 1' buildings and a slate of historic figures for banners to be used during a May history observance and in walking-tour materials.
Members debated which commercial buildings and homes to include; the group converged on a dozen downtown priority buildings (examples cited by commissioners: the library at 207 Mill Street, Del Oro Theater, the Union Building, Alpha/Grass Valley Hardware, Elks Lodge, former post office, Masonic Temple and others) and identified an expanded list of roughly 26–27 historic figures to be recognized on banners. Commissioners emphasized representative diversity and discussed sourcing photographs, including limited archival images for Maidu community members and early Black leaders.
Mark agreed to compile a revised list of buildings and names and send a final draft to the chair within 24 hours so the commission could forward materials for the next City Council briefing. Commissioners asked the historical society and staff to help locate high-resolution images suitable for reproduction and noted some names might be paired (for example the Kidder family) when photographic documentation is limited.
The commission also discussed timing and logistics for banner display (May observance) and the possibility of rotating banners for holidays (e.g., veteran-focused banners on Veterans Day) pending City Council approval. Staff will return with proposed photographs and the finalized list for formal approval.
