Mahwah board unveils 2025'2030 strategic plan focusing on curriculum, wellness and facilities

Superintendent (Speaker 3) summarized accomplishments from the district's 2020'2025 plan and said the new plan will build on that work. "We've also enhanced dual enrollment at the high school, and that's really a point of pride," the superintendent said, pointing to expanded college-credit opportunities and a rise in internship and externship placements from three in the first year to more than 60 this year.
Miss Graff, the district's director of curriculum instruction, said the curriculum goals include sustaining programs that challenge learners at every level, infusing inquiry-based and project-based learning, and expanding access to AP and dual-enrollment opportunities. "We're committed to leveraging technology and innovative tools including AI to create hands-on learning experiences that enhance student engagement and understanding," Graff said, adding that the district plans a multiyear rollout and professional development before broad classroom use.
Graff said the district proposed an AI committee, led by technology coach Courtney Neglia, to develop ethical guidelines and resources for AI integration. The district emphasized that parents and staff will be informed before classroom implementation.
On social-emotional learning, speaker Ms. Rizzo described a districtwide "Wings of Wellness" initiative grounded in CASEL competencies, counseling alignment from kindergarten through 12th grade and programming to develop resilience and healthy habits.
Facilities also figure prominently in the plan. The superintendent said the district completed a comprehensive facilities audit and will use that audit to prioritize HVAC, roofing, windows and paving projects. The board announced a state-of-the-facilities meeting on Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the T3 Building to gather community feedback ahead of possible referendum planning.
Why it matters: the plan links classroom goals to family and community partnerships and identifies facilities needs that may require voter support. The district framed the strategy around increasing career-pathway opportunities and equitable access to advanced coursework while signaling caution and community involvement before large-scale adoption of classroom AI.
The board's presentation included updates from student representatives about extracurricular successes, and administrators said parent academy sessions and posted district materials will provide additional detail on curriculum and assessments in the coming weeks.
The district did not set an immediate implementation date for the full strategic plan; leaders said progress reports will be posted on the district website and shared with the board during the coming academic year.
