Resident urges stricter county media policy and sanctions after repeated official-post complaints

During Citizens Time on Sept. 3, Steve Gregson of Fancy Gap asked the Carroll County Board of Supervisors to revise and tighten its media policy after raising multiple complaints about a board member's use of official titles and county property for personal matters.

Gregson said the board previously adopted a social media policy but that its placement and wording have caused confusion between "social media" and "traditional media." He urged changing the policy title so that all media fall under the same rules and detailed complaints alleging repeated misuse of the board member's official title and county resources. He recommended the board remove the member from at least two committees, consider broader removal, require compliance training for supervisors, and impose a $5,000 fine payable to the library literacy fund.

"Due to the court's 2 decisions in March '24, these misuses and continued violations need to be addressed immediately and firmly," Gregson said, asking supervisory action.

Delilah Brady, who spoke later in Citizens Time, thanked the board for investigating and emphasized professional conduct. She described related vandalism in Fancy Gap as a disturbing possibility and urged that elected officials maintain a clear separation between public duties and personal business.
