The Murfreesboro City Council voted to approve an additional $191,644 to cover seven counteroffers tied to easement acquisitions for the Thompson Lane widening project, a staff presenter told the council.
Valerie, the city staff member handling right-of-way acquisitions, said the city originally issued about 98–99 easement offers in early July and used tax-assessor values as starting points. She said Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) declined to share its appraisals, and the seven counteroffers received increased the city’s required easement budget to $880,644.
"We are requesting a $191,644 for the counter offers that we've received," Valerie said in presenting the item and asked the council for approval.
A council member moved approval and a second was recorded. The council’s roll call recorded votes of Aye from Miss Gail Harris, Vice Mayor Shacklett, Mister Wade, Mister Wright and Mayor McFarland; the motion carried.
Why it matters: Thompson Lane is a planned widening project that requires multiple property easements to construct roadway improvements. City staff said the additional funding covers only the counteroffers received to date and more amendments could be needed as negotiations continue with other property owners.
What’s next: Staff will continue easement negotiations for remaining parcels and return to council if additional funds are required for future counteroffers.
