Council adopts CVB Hot Funds recommendations, awards $135,000 to 18 events and arts groups

The Victoria City Council adopted recommendations from the Convention and Visitors Bureau Sept. 16 to allocate $135,000 in Hot Funds (hotel occupancy tax) for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.
A CVB representative said the program received 18 applications requesting a total of $317,355 and explained the fund splits: 65% of the pool is allocated to Group 1 (room-night generators) and 35% to Group 2 (arts and historic preservation organizations). The subcommittee recommended 11 awards in Group 1 and seven awards in Group 2. The presenter noted, "We have a 135,000 between 18 total awards..." and that Group 2 award amounts ranged from about $12,086 for the Museum of the Coastal Bend down to roughly $5,090 for the Victoria Symphony.
Staff said the awards are reimbursement-based, applicants were notified Sept. 2 and given an appeals window; no official appeals were received by the Sept. 4 deadline. The subcommittee also signaled it will hold workshops to tweak program rules for future cycles, including eligibility adjustments when applicants fail to stage awarded events.
Council voted to adopt the CVB’s recommendations; staff will draft contracts and finalize awards with the organizations, with funding effective Oct. 1.
