Council appoints three to Parks and Recreation Commission; Rodriguez, Kiner and Hughes selected

The Victoria City Council appointed three members to the Parks and Recreation Commission at its Sept. 16 meeting, filling seats that expire this month.
By ballot, Carolina Rodriguez received six votes, Julie Hughes received five votes and Lisa Kiner received four votes. Council then moved to appoint the three by motion and voice vote; the motion carried.
City staff summarized the commission's role under Ordinance 2021-141, saying the nine-member board advises the Parks and Recreation Department on planning, acquisition and development of parks and facilities and serves three-year staggered terms with term limits. Staff noted Ms. Hughes was eligible for reappointment, Ms. Eder was not eligible due to term limits, and Mr. Hayek requested not to be reappointed after recent appointment to the Planning Commission.
Carolina Rodriguez, who introduced herself during citizens communication as an assistant registrar at Victoria College and a lifelong Victoria resident, said she would 'show up prepared, ask questions, and offer input that reflects my lived experiences' if appointed. Several council members praised the quality of applicants and encouraged others to remain engaged in board service.
The newly appointed members' terms run through Sept. 30, 2028, and staff will process appointment paperwork.
