Centerville council extends gun-range lease for three months as lead remediation proceeds

The Centerville City Council unanimously approved a three‑month extension of the lease with the Centerville Small Arms Association on Sept. 16 to allow more time for lead‑remediation cost estimates and final mapping of the leased footprint.

Staff and the police chief told the council the city has been working with a specialized vendor to obtain an estimate for lead remediation at the range and has asked for more time to finish that work. "The most recent delay has been the lead remediation estimates that we've been struggling to get from a very, specific and particular vendor," a city speaker said, explaining why a short extension was proposed.

Larry Scanlon, representing the Centerville Small Arms Association, told the council the association's new board has been active on the project and supported the extension. "I'd be in favor of extending the agreement," Scanlon said, describing volunteer work and new interest in improving the range.

Council members asked staff to confirm details in the amendment language — including an internal recital date that appears to be a copy‑paste error — and to consider trail access where the lease footprint approaches a road, so hikers and bikers retain safe passage when the range is in use. One council member asked staff to ensure mapping reflects agreed boundaries to maintain trail access across the Bonneville shoreline.

A council member moved to approve "Amendment No. 5" extending the current lease term for three months (to the end of December 2025 as clarified during discussion); another council member seconded. The motion passed by roll call vote, recorded as unanimous (5–0).

The council directed staff to correct the amendment date in the recital language and to follow up on the trail‑access mapping and insurance/remediation documentation. The city will return with finalized documents before any longer‑term lease or a five‑year agreement is adopted.
