Hockey families ask Francis Howell board to formally recognize club teams

Several parents, players and club leaders addressed the Francis Howell R-III Board on Sept. 18 to ask the district to formally recognize club hockey teams across the district and allow club athletes to participate in school announcements, homecoming activities and yearbook inclusion.

"What we're asking for? Recognition," said Jeff Bridges, president of the Francis Howell Hockey Club. Bridges said club families raise their own funds and hire coaches and that the request is about student inclusion and visibility rather than district funding. "We're here to ask that our student athletes be recognized in announcements at their respective schools, recognition of their achievements on and off the ice, be a part of the homecoming celebrations, and inclusion in the yearbook," he said.

Student speakers and club representatives reinforced the point. Senior player Caleb Bridges said recognition matters to student morale and retention: "Recognition isn't just about a banner or a trophy ... it's about showing students that their hard work matters." Club officials said some other neighboring districts permit similar recognition and that last year Francis Howell Central participated in homecoming by error, which the clubs saw as an encouraging precedent.

Board members thanked the families for appearing and asked administration to review the policy that limits non-sanctioned clubs' participation in school activities. Executive director of facilities and operations Salim Stutzer and others described how policies and logistics (facilities scheduling, insurance, and existing athletics regulations) factor into decisions. No formal board action was taken at the meeting; board members indicated they would review existing policy and return with options or further discussion.
