Board approves school calendar and curriculum motions; forms AI guidelines committee

The Rutherford Board of Education approved six curriculum motions on Dec. 2, including adoption of the proposed school calendar for next year, authorization of out‑of‑district placements, approval of 94 field trips, a harassment and intimidation voting decision, home instruction for one student, and new curriculum guides and electives (including executive functioning skills and honors ensembles).
Mrs. Jones, the curriculum chair, said the electives were expedited so they could be included in scheduling for 2025–26. Board members praised the offerings; President remarked that executive‑functioning instruction is an important developmental offering.
On legislation, Mrs. Jones briefed the board on Senate Bill 3876 (introduced Nov. 18 by Assemblywoman Angela McKnight, D‑31), which would require K–12 instruction on artificial intelligence and direct the Secretary of Higher Education to develop model curricula. The superintendent said the district will not rush into new formal policy because AI is rapidly evolving; instead the district will convene a committee led by Ms. O'Donnell and education‑technology teachers to develop administrative and academic guidelines beginning in January.
The curriculum motions and the district's plan to form an AI guidance committee were all noted and approved as part of the meeting's roll‑call votes.
