Taylor ISD board approves district-of-innovation amendments addressing grievance and library rules (7-0)

The Taylor ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve amendments to the districts District of Innovation (DOI) plan that the educational improvement committee recommended.

Staff explained the amendments address two items from the recent legislative session. The first amendment seeks flexibility to preserve local grievance procedures while meeting new requirements in Senate Bill 12; presenters said the change is intended to avoid automatically fast-tracking certain grievances straight to the board and to preserve local steps and accountability. The second amendment concerns the local school library advisory council (SLAC) and state-suggested acquisition processes; staff said a new state timeline could require public listing and a 30-day waiting period for donations and procurements and that compliance could delay getting donated or purchased materials into studentshands by as much as four months. The district asked to retain its existing librarian-led selection and vetting process to expedite service while maintaining rigorous review.

Trustee Buzones moved to approve the DOI amendment; Trustee Mitchell seconded. The board called for a vote and the motion carried 7-0.

The board then proceeded with the consent agenda and personnel items later in the meeting; those motions also carried unanimously.

Staff emphasized the DOI changes would not sacrifice accountability or transparency but would preserve local processes that the district said have worked effectively in past practice.
