Taylor ISD principals report smooth rollout of new personal communication device policy

Taylor ISD principals and administrators reported positive early results from the districts new personal communication device policy, which covers cell phones, smartwatches and other personal devices.
Miss Patchy and other principals said implementation went smoothly across campuses: administrators described fewer classroom distractions, more face-to-face interaction at lunch and increased student focus during instruction. Danielle, an administrator who monitors referrals, said the transition has been "smooth" and that "we have not had any issues or any complaints," adding that the disciplinary steps written into the policy (first-time device pickup with afternoon pickup, escalation to parent contact if necessary) have not been required beyond initial warnings.
Principals said the districts outreach to parents before school and a summertime parent meeting helped set expectations. At the high school, staff reported that many students adapted by leaving devices in backpacks or using available school lockers (some of which may be reassigned), and some teachers reported greater on-task behavior in staff meetings following the rollout.
Trustees asked whether students were reflecting on the experience; principals gave anecdotal examples including a returning student who said being less distracted by a phone helped her finish coursework and graduate.
No policy change was voted on at the meeting; the presentations were informational and the board asked staff to continue monitoring incidents and to report back as needed.
