Taylor ISD reports steady progress on bond-funded campus projects; contingencies tracked for future work

Taylor ISD officials on Nov. 18 updated the Board of Trustees on the district's bond-funded construction program, saying exterior finishes are advancing across campuses and that two large projects—the high school CTE center and the middle school—are expected to wrap up in early spring.

The board heard that mechanical startup work is scheduled this month at the Taylor High School CTE center, furniture and specialized equipment (including welding booths) have been ordered and some items may arrive earlier than expected. At MSE and TH Johnson, canopies and exterior panels are being installed; middle school masonry is roughly 90% complete, and district maintenance building finishes and new bus parking are progressing.

District staff also reviewed project finances. "We've got about $12,000,000 still uncommitted," the presenter said, and noted that roughly $2.1 to $2.2 million in contingency funds remain spread across projects. About $7 million is currently held for potential land purchases, and $2.6 million is allocated for future design work. Staff said contingency balances will be examined as projects close out so unspent funds can be reallocated to district priorities such as land purchase or new projects.

Trustees raised a design issue involving a kitchen pass-through that may require specialty work and a change order. Project staff said they have quotes and are tracking the issue; they explained some elements of the configuration were design choices and that the team is analyzing whether the district will absorb related costs.

The board did not take formal action on the update; staff invited trustees to submit follow-up questions and requested that noted construction items be compiled for Dr. Garcia so the board receives consolidated updates.

The district plans to complete the remaining site work and finish interior punch-list items over the winter breaks and into early next year as needed.
