County entomologist outlines mosquito-control steps for Neptune Beach; aerial spraying reserved for outbreaks

Dr. Benjamin Allen, introduced at the meeting as “doctor Benjamin Allen, the City of Jacksonville entomologist,” told Neptune Beach council members on July 7 that the county uses an ‘‘integrated vector management’’ approach that prioritizes surveillance, larval control and targeted adult treatments rather than routine aerial spraying.
Allen described expanding surveillance from seven traps under his predecessor to roughly 40 countywide, and said ground and larval treatments remain the first-line defense. He said larval products such as BTI and methoprene are highly target-specific and pose minimal non-target risk. For adult mosquitoes, he said crews use a permethrin–PBO ultra-low-volume mist for ground operations.
