Aventura commission issues hunger and Alzheimer’s proclamations, honors finance team and public servants

The Aventura City Commission began its Sept. 2 meeting with community recognitions and proclamations.
Mayor Howard Weinberg read a proclamation declaring September 2025 as Hunger Action Month and presented it to Krista Toussaint of Feeding South Florida. Krista thanked the commission and said, "1 in 9 South Floridians faces hunger," and invited residents to volunteer and raise awareness.
The commission also proclaimed September as World Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and heard a brief personal account from a local resident and former assisted‑living operator who described a nine‑year caregiving experience, noted advances including a commercially available blood test and new treatments, and offered partnership with the city and the Alzheimer’s Association.
The finance department received the Florida Government Finance Officers Association "Triple Crown" recognition for excellence in financial reporting, popular annual financial reporting and distinguished budget presentation; Sean Gale of the GFOA presented the award and staff praised Melissa and her team for achieving the recognition while implementing a new ERP system.
The meeting included photo opportunities for ACES spelling‑bee winners and a 15‑year service award for Sergeant Chris Alfred, who was recognized for investigative work, training, SWAT participation and work on accreditation while pursuing a master's degree.
These agenda items were ceremonial; no formal votes were required.
