Mason council approves introduction and first reading of rezoning ordinance for 710 North Cedar Street

The Mason City Council on May 5 approved on first reading Ordinance No. 260 to rezone the property at 710 North Cedar Street from C2 Central Commercial District to M2 General Manufacturing District.
Mayor Whipple moved to introduce the ordinance and the motion was seconded; after discussion the council voted 7-0 to approve the introduction and first reading. The motion passed with all members recorded in favor.
Mayor Pro Tem Clark raised questions about a packet letter from AKT Peerless that described environmental testing but did not include results. "Do we have copies and or do we know what the results of those tests were? Did everything come out the way that we thought it was? Is there gonna be any abatements necessary?" she asked.
The City Manager responded that staff had reported findings previously at a Department of Public Works presentation and that the environmental work had been completed. "This is just required for Planning Commission to know that the environmental work has been done and completed but there were no concerns," the manager said.
Ordinance No. 260 amends Mason's zoning map by changing the classification of the parcel at 710 North Cedar from C2 to M2; the council's action on May 5 was an introduction and first reading only. The ordinance passed first reading 7-0.
The council did not adopt the ordinance on final reading during this meeting; the first-reading approval advances the item in the city's ordinance process.
