Evansville council ratifies three-year firefighters’ contract; union leaders say membership overwhelmingly approved

The Evansville Common Council on Dec. 9 ratified a three-year agreement with the International Association of Firefighters Local 357, approving Resolution C-2024-27 by a recorded vote of nine ayes, zero nays.
City staff and the presiding officer described the agreement as reflecting mayoral priorities on public-safety compensation and longevity step changes. Larry Zuber, introduced by the president and identified in the transcript as the union president, told the council negotiations were "very professional, very cordial," and said his membership supported the contract by "over 99%" in their ratification vote.
Zuber told the council the contract is intended to improve retention and put the department on more competitive footing with comparable communities. "This puts us on a level playing field across the state with comparable sized departments," he said, and urged the council to vote yes on the resolution.
Council members expressed appreciation for firefighters; the clerk recorded nine ayes and zero nays and declared the resolution adopted.
The agreement covers Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2027; the resolution ratifies the collectively bargained terms as presented to the council.
