Evansville Board of Public Safety approves event and road closures, surplus declarations and construction parking permits

The City of Evansville Board of Public Safety approved a package of permits and administrative actions at its Nov. 20 meeting that will affect traffic patterns and city services in coming weeks.
Among the approvals, the board granted a special‑event permit to the Evansville Rescue Mission for its Gobbler Gathering food distribution that will close Ninth Street between Walden and Locust from Nov. 25 at 5 a.m. through Nov. 26 at 11 p.m. Chair (unnamed) said barricades were requested and the board voted to approve the closure.
The board also approved a police‑recommended closure for the Evansville Philharmonic’s Nutcracker event: Sixth Street (Maine to Sycamore and Sycamore to Vine) will be closed Dec. 13 from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., with barricades in place. Separately, CRG Residential’s request to close portions of Fifth Street and Sycamore for ongoing construction from Dec. 20 through January 2025 was approved.
Purchasing staff reported only one bid was received for a towing contract: Tri State Towing. The board voted to take the single proposal under advisement for evaluation rather than award the contract on the spot.
Deputy Chief Garrett told the board the fire department needs to surplus older and uneconomical equipment. "We request to surplus the following items," he said, naming a 1995 LTI Spartan quint truck (unit 905) that the department described as damaged beyond repair and three exercise bikes whose repair cost would exceed replacement. The board voted to approve both surplus declarations.
The board approved two dumpster permits (25 Madison Ave., Nov. 27–Dec. 3; 720 Bell Ave., Nov. 20–Dec. 20) and granted parking permits to two vehicles for Allstate Huffman Plumbing to support work on the vault project at 424 Main St. The plumbing company’s permits run from Nov. 14, 2024, through Dec. 31, 2025.
Board members approved the claims and the minutes from the Nov. 6 meeting and set their next meeting for Dec. 4.
The approvals were procedural and largely noncontroversial; where staff or applicants were present they provided brief explanations and the board recorded aye votes to adopt the requests.
