Oak Lawn honors Domino's employees who rescued child from trailer fire

The Village of Oak Lawn on Nov. 12 publicly recognized two Domino’s employees, Nasruddin Kanfer and Sarah Jones, for their actions during an Oct. 7 mobile‑home fire at the Airway Trailer Park.

Fire Department leadership told the board the employees were closing the restaurant in the early morning hours when they noticed a trailer on fire across Cicero Avenue. According to the chief's remarks, Kanfer and Jones crossed the street, found a frantic father trying to access the burning trailer and, with the help of a 12‑year‑old interpreter, learned an 8‑year‑old remained inside. The chief said the employees helped break a window, move debris and pull the child to safety ‘‘just moments before the entire mobile home was engulfed in flames.’’ The child spent one day at Christ Hospital for evaluation, with minor burns and smoke inhalation, and was released.

Mayor and trustees invited the honorees to the front of the auditorium for commemorative plaques and life‑saving medals and posed for photos. In presenting the awards the chief described the event as an example of how community members can make a difference when they decide to get involved.
