Sykesville Historic District Commission approves three façade and sign applications, adopts 2025 meeting schedule

The Sykesville Historic District Commission voted to approve three separate applications for storefront, porch and signage changes and adopted its meeting schedule for 2025 during a regularly scheduled meeting.
Staff presented application 2024-29 for 7611 Main Street, proposing to replace an existing garage door with double storefront doors and add a porch landing and steps to become the main entry for the middle business suite. Speaker 3 described the building as non-contributing (built 1949) and recommended approval. "Staff felt that the requested items were consistent with the guidelines and recommended approval," Speaker 3 said. Speaker 5 moved to approve the application and Speaker 2 seconded; the motion carried with commissioners voting 'Aye.'
The commission then considered application 2024-30 for 7557 Main Street, a contributing structure built in 1932. Staff recommended routine mortar-joint repairs (which do not require approval if matching materials are used) and installation of textured honed bluestone caps on the front porch steps and pillars to level steps for safety while preserving visible original brick. Speaker 3 said staff was comfortable with the request, noting that a honed finish would reduce slickness. Speaker 6 moved to approve the application, Speaker 5 seconded, and the motion carried.
For 7546 Main Street, an absent applicant requested approval for a two-sided 29"x36" hanging sign for Sorella On Main. Staff advised the sign met clearance and setback rules and offered two material options: a carved high-density urethane panel or a wood panel with vinyl graphics. Speaker 4 moved to approve the sign application, giving the applicant discretion on material choice; Speaker 2 seconded and the motion carried.
Finally, commissioners voted to adopt the HDC meeting schedule for 2025 (fourth Wednesday of each month, except November and December) after Speaker 3 presented the calendar and Speaker 4 moved for approval.
All three applications and the schedule were approved by voice vote with no recorded dissents in the meeting record. Approved applications will proceed according to normal permitting and installation processes.
