Students and sponsors of the Cavemen in the Community Club presented a fundraising check of $1,105.88 to the American Cancer Society at the School City of Mishawaka board meeting on Dec. 4.
Randy Ebright, the club sponsor and an English teacher at Mishawaka High School, explained the club—s No Shade November campaign and introduced student leaders who organized collection efforts. The presentation included an itemized list of contributions from staff: Principal Brew ($46.12), PSO (Ms. Bonk) ($252.65), Mr. Powell ($343.24), Ms. Starkweather ($87.49), Mr. Hallicki ($24.72), Mr. Rendell ($101.42) and Mr. Ebright ($250.65), totaling $1,105.88.
Jamie Miller of the American Cancer Society accepted the donation and thanked the students, staff and host parents. "On behalf of breast cancer patients and their caregivers, the American Cancer Society is very grateful for this partnership," Miller said, noting locally raised funds support research and patient/caregiver programs.
Ebright said organizers hope to establish the campaign as an annual tradition and thanked host parents and volunteers. The board and audience applauded the students.
What happens next: The club plans to continue the campaign next November and expects to refine logistics based on this year's experience.
