The committee received an update on pedestrian-safety work at the Anderson Drive crossing near Southeast High School. Staff reported recent steps taken to improve visibility and reduce conflicts during peak drop-off and pickup: no-parking zones were extended to improve sight lines; updated high-visibility crosswalk signage was installed; and public-safety officers (including SROs) were directed to provide active enforcement focused on warnings and citations as needed.
Staff also told the committee they are evaluating whether to relocate the nearby bus stop (currently adjacent to the crosswalk). If the stop moves, accessible sidewalk connections and curb cuts will be required to maintain ADA access and safe pedestrian routing, which would entail modest capital work. Members recommended advanced signage to warn motorists of the crossing and, where appropriate, repainting crosswalks using high-visibility materials.
Staff will monitor the area this school year and consider further measures if enforcement and signage do not sufficiently improve safety.
