District says weapon found at Hinsdale South; temporary weapons-detection screenings to start

Superintendent Dr. Locke informed the Board of Education that earlier the same day the district had implemented a hold-in-place at Hinsdale South after a weapon was located on campus. Darien police were notified and responded, and administration said no students or staff were placed in danger.
Locke told trustees the district would deploy a weapons-detection system at Hinsdale South beginning the following morning and continue that practice at least through the Thanksgiving holiday while staff work with law enforcement to refine next steps. He characterized the incident as "scary" and said it appeared to be a narrow event, but emphasized a districtwide focus on layered safety strategies including belonging, mental-health supports, physical security measures and interagency coordination.
District officials said they will provide updates to the board and community as the review and analysis continue and noted the need to counter misinformation on social media about the incident.
