City Manager McKenna Westbrook told council staff had reviewed vendor and attendance feedback and recommended shortening the event to reduce direct costs and the operational burden on finance and public-works staff. "If we reduce down to two days, according to my events team, we'll still have an amazing Independence Days," Westbrook said, citing staff time and the need to balance service with family time for employees.
Councilors debated the proposal: one councilor said extreme heat and day-to-day attendance variability suggested a single year's data might not be decisive, and another argued compressing the event would increase safety and reduce costs while preserving two fireworks shows. After discussion, a councilor moved to adopt the resolution; the motion was seconded, the clerk conducted a roll call, and the motion carried.
Council did not change the practice of holding a hometown fireworks event in addition to the main fireworks display. The action was framed as a year-by-year scheduling decision; Westbrook said staff will return each year for council direction unless council delegates that authority.
Next steps: staff will plan Independence Days 2025 on a two-day basis and coordinate logistics, fireworks scheduling, vendor outreach and public-safety staffing.
