Council approves $725,000 AMI contract to modernize ~2,200 water meters

A staff representative said the AMI project includes communication radios and replacement or upgrade of approximately 2,200 existing water meters to automate metering, streamline billing and improve leak detection. Jacobs Engineering scored proposals after vendor interviews and Ferguson was rated highest. The recommended contract amount is not to exceed $725,000, funded by ARPA.
Councilors asked about how much of the city’s meters would be upgraded (staff said roughly 1,700 of the 2,200 were existing in Talent) and whether lifecycle costs were included in rate planning. Staff confirmed that the water rate structure had been planned to absorb lifecycle costs but noted external rate changes by the Medford Water Commission might require further rate action. A motion to award the AMI project to Ferguson Water Works for an amount not to exceed $725,000 passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize the contract with Ferguson and proceed with scheduling to meet ARPA allocation timelines.
