Mundelein board authorizes $90,000 engineering for Cortland Commons pedestrian bridge after debate

The Village Board on Dec. 9 authorized the director of public works and engineering to sign a proposal for engineering a pedestrian bridge at Cortland Commons.
Trustee Ross introduced the motion and Trustee Wilson seconded. Staff said roughly $90,000 remains from the earlier park project and must be used in the project area; that money would pay for engineering only. Staff and trustees discussed permits required for work in or over the creek (Army Corps of Engineers, DNR) and said engineering must begin now if the village hopes to have construction ready for the next season.
Several trustees questioned timing and priority relative to other infrastructure needs. "This screams ... a want versus a need," one trustee said, asking whether the village should be committing design dollars now while other streets and infrastructure await funding. Supporters responded that event feedback and accessibility complaints had established a need for better access for small vendors and people with mobility issues.
Trustee Lambert asked for visual renderings; staff said renderings had not been prepared but suggested the bridge could be modeled on a smaller bridge at the far east end of the detention area. On roll call the motion passed with Trustee Lambert recorded as No; the motion carried.
