State traceability staff walked the board through the recent federal change that defines electronic identification (EID/RFID) as an acceptable form of official identification for cattle and clarified intrastate and interstate differences in when visual ID is required.
Katie (state traceability lead) said animals that were officially tagged before the rule date remain valid for life, but that markets, producers and veterinarians will need clarity on when new EID tags must be applied and which animals are exempt (for example, direct-to-slaughter movements). The presenter described outreach and training efforts, lists of approved tag vendors, and a planned priority distribution for any federally allocated tags. Implementation challenges the state highlighted include limited tag availability, the cost burden on small/hobby producers and the logistics of market tagging.
Board members recommended continued outreach to markets and producers and suggested the board prioritize distribution to high-need groups if additional tags become available.
